friendship

Narrative -

Little boy is found in a jungle and adopted by a pack of wolves but is eventually being hunted by a tiger in the wild therefore he cannot stay there and a friendly bear and panther make it their mission to get him back to his human home where he will be a lot safer.

Representation of places/things -

females are expected to take care of the home aspect where as the males are meant to hunt there is also a lack of females in the film being a total of 3 examples being the elephant female is not allowed to be charge of the army as well as the girl singing whilst collecting water was singing about how she will stay at home and cook.

The Jungle Book 2016

Young boy - Mowgli

Panther - Bagheera

Tiger - Shere Khan

Bear - Baloo

Monkey - King Louie

A little boy who was abandoned by father who was killed in the jungle is found and raised by wolves,  is being hunted by a tiger who believes the little boy will grow up to be a man who will destroy the jungle, then the little boy kills the tiger towards the end with the help of the entire jungle bringing everyone together and having more inclusivity than the original in 1967.

Themes -

We got a preview of Mowgli's early life and how he was abandoned, we can also see that the boy stays in the jungle instead of going into a village which at the time 2016 was dismantling brexit and trump wanting to build the wall. Another thing we see at the end the suductive girl never appears

Representations -

There are more female characters in this version as well as the the female wolf takes charge of the pack whilst in the other one the female elephant was refused to ever take charge of the elephant pack.

Life in the 60s had many differences compared to now, the most important events were equal rights, change of youth culture and politics/war. The youth culture was changing, Beatles and rolling stones took the music industry by storm, drug culture was increased as well as fashion changed which was noted as 'hippies'. Equal rights changed, there was a second wave of feminism, removal of capital punishment in the UK as well as legalisation of homosexuality. Some political key events that happened consist of the cold war, the cuban missile crisis, cnd, jfk assassination, vietnam war, grosvenor square protest, paris riots, moon landings, collapse of UK commonwealth. strikes and unions and sexual scandals.

LO: To compare the different audiences for both JB films and the impact on production.

1st disney tg in 60s = 4 - 12 boys and girls families
2nd parents 35-55

We can see a lack of a few values in the JB 60's version, a key thing to take into consideration is that Disney's own politics were conservative. One lack of value we can see is the black civil rights movement, we can see an orang-utan acting apish which was King Louie whilst playing black jazz music, this character represented Louie Armstrong.  We can also see the lack of women empowerment in the 60s an example of this is the girl at the end seducing Mowgli, another example is when the elephants are speaking and the leader of the elephant march says that she wouldn't be allowed to be in charge because she's a woman.

What were the differences between how Disney operated as a film studio and how other studios operated at that time?

What was Walt Disney's own influence on the production?
Walt Disney had a lot of influence on the production, originally it was too dark for him and he wanted it to be a child-friendly so he changed the whole story.

Where did the animators get their inspiration from?

How has Disney become and stayed one of the big five for so long?

There are many reasons why Disney has stayed successful, Disney was already diversifying into theme parks, television series and merchandising deals spreading the awareness of the brand, however they can also be recognised for their great embrace in technology change. What made Disney a lot of money was their refusal to sell tv rights, they re-released jb in the us in cinemas on 1976, 1984 and 1990, they also had many European screenings during 1980s.

LO: To explain the process of making a film and changes within the film industry

WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF MAKING FILMS?
It wasn't possible to see the film you've just shot when it was shot on film roll until the day after so the director would have to just know whether they got the shot or not.
When editing film it meant literally cutting the physical film roll and attaching it again to another point in the film.

HOW HAS IT CHANGED IN THE PAST 20 YEARS?

WHAT IMPACT HAS DIGITALISATION HAD ON THE INDUSTRY?
When digital film came out it was so new and underdeveloped that when filming it would make it a lot easier and easier but the distribution caused a lot of problems because they found that the image would never be any good so once they filmed it digitally they would then transfer it onto a film roll so they could get it into a cinema easier.
Film roll had a shelf life, the more it got used they less visible it would be, whereas digital did not have this problem.
Panavison genesis release

HOW HAS CHANGING TECHNOLOGY EFFECTED THE INDUSTRY?
Sony released the first handheld camera in the 1980s which would help change  film and the angles you were able to get.
Editing films changed when the invention of a editing software on a computer was released.
2007 Red One release which made location shooting a lot easier

WHATS THE FUTURE OF FILMMAKING?

Production

Production in the 60s as nowhere near advanced to how it is now, they would have film roll that they would fill cameras with that would need to be changed every so often during shooting. When digital film was released it was underdeveloped however it made filming easier but the distribution caused problems because they found that the image would never be good, so once they filmed it digitally they would transfer it onto film roll so they could get it into the cinema easier. Film roll had a shelf life, the more it got used the less visible it would be, whereas digital did not have this problem, for editing they would have to use their barehands on the film roll and cut it with a machine and stick it onto another scene, this was just to make jump-cuts. Technology started advancing in the 1980s when Sony released the first handheld camera which would change film and the angles you were able to get. The invention of computers and editing software on computers made the editing much easier and versatile, this would accommodate for colour grading, cgi and many other effects. With software and computers getting more advanced so did they equipment, the release of the Panavision genesis and the release of the Red One made film production a lot easier, such as providing better quality images like 4k resolution as well as making on-location shooting a lot easier with many other benefits. The future of film is only going to get more advanced especially with the upcoming artificial intelligence taking the world by storm recent.

Jungle Book 2016: Technology, social media and exchange.

The marketing campaign was intertwined with the use of social media to create an immersive experience.
They had an interactive website.
Special promotions at IMAX cinemas
Interactive movie poster for Snapchat discover
Virtual reality experience and 360 degree Facebook video of the jungle
An initial trailer, 7 second clip teased on Instagram
Special extended 3D trailer in IMAX shown before Star Wars

The teaser marketing campaign was crucial to bring a classic movie to a more tech-savvy generation.
They showed sections bit by bit without losing the audiences interest.
Technology became a prominent part of marketing and social media meant that audiences were able to become a part of the experience.
Disney had a huge marketing budget but still followed the traditional marketing practices, their power can be seen in the first global TV spot during the US super bowl.
Technology, nostalgia and Favreau's star status were the main points of the marketing campaign.

What did Disney do to promote and advertise the release of the Jungle Book 2016?

They created a unique virtual reality experience where players got to meet each one of the characters in a completely different way never seen before.

They had special promotions at IMAX cinemas as well as a special extended 3D trailer in IMAX cinemas being shown before a Star Wars which is a well known franchise.

They targeted the older generation with the use of nostalgia in their techniques by referencing the older 1967 jungle book.

Posting promotion on various different accounts, Cast, Disney, JB own social media.

They uploaded an interactive movie poser on snapchat (filter) which turned the users face into Kaa (the snake.

Jon Favreau showed sneak peek footage of the jungle book at a 7800 seat arena at a fan Disney convention.

Disney targeted the male audience a lot more and made sure of it by mentioning that it was from the 'studios of pirates and the Caribbean' and the 'director of iron man' as opposed to the 'studios of cinderella'.

They also released a trailer in the middle of the super-bowl which is Americas biggest event in which millions of people would be sat at their TV watching so it was the perfect time to release a trailer.

They altered all of their theme parks to also promote the movie even offering 'sneak peeks' for some of the scenes in the movie at various points in the park and making jungle book related merchandise even before the movie came out, this would help spread the word of mouth which is as we know the best way for a movie to gain popularity.

The first gaming related thing started in 1972, pong becomes the first commercially successful arcade game, then console was introduced and space invaders became popular, then the rise of PC gaming in 1993 with doom the first person shooter game, however before that handheld starts to become popular with the release of the gameboy made me Nintendo. All the others seem to grow or stay consistent whereas arcade and handheld games seem to decrease to nearly no users. Mobile was introduced and it grew rapidly, being the biggest revenue at 85 billion, pc being 40 billion and console being 33 billion.
All of these had notable releases such as mobile releasing candy crush to angry birds and PC releasing Minecraft, console releasing xbox live and so on.

Notch worked for a game development company while making Minecraft in his spare time he then quit his job to work full time on Minecraft.

He then went on to create mojang which was a group of 7 people to help develop the game further after 1 million sales

He released the alpha version of the game so players could play the game as he was still developing it and adding new updates for free.

Friday 26th January 2024

The production and initial development of Minecraft was done differently to how a 2011 game would have been produced then. Notch starting the development of the game in his spare time whilst working for another game development company at the time, when he saw the potential of Minecraft he then quit his job to provide more hours to the development of the game. The demand was getting overwhelming for him so he constructed a team and named it Mojang, this team at the time was a small team of 7 developers. Minecraft made 33 million dollars in the first 4 months, and it refused to get bought out by conglomerate gaming corporations.

Friday 31st January 2024

Minecraft was a response for gaming on any device, this allowed for wider non-traditional gamers to game on devices like phone, digital distribution allowed easy access to global markets. Minecraft became a product that could be packaged and distributed.

Why did Microsoft buy it?
How much was it bought for? 2.5 billion dollars
How has the game changed since corporate ownership?

In 2014 it was a global success, Mojang had made deals with Nintendo and Sony, in 2014 Microsoft bought the intellectual property rights and the company Mojang they had a vision for the game and realised they could sell add-ons and merchandise.

What they sold:
Books
LEGO Minecraft set
Minecraft based clothing

Jack was a person who made skins for Minecraft that allowed you to change your appearance in-game, he was in then employed and had to sign an non-disclosure agreement at 16, he used the money he made to save up for college.

They made bedrock edition.

Fandom - A community based around a media product

Prosumer - A consumer who creates his own content around the media product

Spreadable media - Viral potential from fans rather than the business

Participatory culture - Fan cultures

YouTube - DanTDM

Modding community - Forge

Server - InsanityCraft

The audience contributed to the success of Minecraft in many ways, one example being Youtube videos/documentaries, DanTDM for example has millions of subscribers and he is recognised for his Minecraft content that he pushed out on many people, this influenced them enticing them to buy Minecraft too so they could do something similar to what DanTDM was doing. The audience further contributed to the success of Minecraft by modding the game. Minecraft is a open-source game which means it allows for tampering/changing of code, with this people added many interesting things and uploaded it on to platforms such as Reddit to showcase it. This influenced people to start changing the code themselves and adding even more interesting things, some of the most popular mods are new monsters and new biomes. This links with the theorist Jenkins who talks about fandom,  fan cultures are recognised as participatory cultures, these fans don't only act as consumers but they also create their own media products around the initial media product, these are known as prosumers. This allowed for Minecraft to be spreadable media because the audience played a massive chunk in contributing to the success of Minecraft by creating awareness.

Exploring marketing of Minecraft

Convergence - When different technologies emerge into one

Marketing - Word of mouth, Notch was easily accessible and listening to ideas.

Mojang efficiently marketed Minecraft without any budget by using many non-conventional tricks, such as fandom, word of mouth, digital convergence at the time, Notch being easily accessible and implementing ideas that were said. Word of mouth played a big part in the promotion of Minecraft, one of the reasons I think is because it was targeted at all age ranges to show their creativity, if Minecraft wasn't the sandbox game it was and was a shooter game I think it wouldn't have been nearly as successful as it was. The use of word of mouth spread everywhere, to youtube, forums, real life scenarios and more.

Explain how video games target and maintain a range of audiences. Use Minecraft to support your answer.

Maintaining 1: Language

Language is a large factor how Minecraft target a large demographic, this specifically is about ethnicity. Minecraft doesn't include any dialogue in the game, except for the buttons at the start which users are able to change into their preferred language, once they have launched into the game there are no language barriers. This allows for anyone in the world to play Minecraft since the gameplay is self-explanatory yet effective, this maintains audiences because they don't need to learn a certain language to be able to play Minecraft or know what words mean in another language.

Maintaining 2: Regular updates

Regular updates supports Minecraft for maintaining their player base. When Minecraft was bought by Mojang, everyone thought that updates were going to cost money, this in fact didn't happen. The game remained as a one-time purchase offering all the content of Minecraft, all the updates that come with this purchase helps maintain their audience because there are always new items / creatures to interact and mess around with. Another way audience maintaining is supported is that Minecraft listen to fan's ideas, an example of this being a new turtle creature suggested and then implemented, the person who came up with this idea was then rewarded a one of one turtle in-game cape accessory. However one of their most successful 'updates', was the fact the game was open-sourced, this means that the players could make their own updates you could say, these fan-made creations were then able to be purchased or downloaded for free, some of these include fan-made creatures, new places to explore and many more.

Target 1: Youtube presence

Minecraft had a massive Youtube presence, this guided the game to success by influencing people to purchase. Many videos of Minecraft are uploaded to Youtube everyday, encouraging even more people to purchase, some notable mentions are people like Yogcast and Dantdm who have accumulated over millions if not billions of views, this was essentially seen like free promotion for Minecraft. The videos were endless since people could do whatever they want, thanks to the creativity of Minecraft, this inspired people to purchase the game and do something similar. The Youtube presence of Minecraft allowed for fanbases/communities to be created,

Target 2: Offers multiple plays to play

Minecraft offers multiple ways to play, this varies from PC, Xbox, mobile and many more.
